I’m really serious about proper food handling in my kitchen. After all, if you are preparing food for your family you shouldn’t just think if it’s healthy and delicious but if it is safe to eat and clean.
But did you know that even the cleanest kitchen have the dirtiest items, especially if you are not aware that you should regularly clean them?
Here are some of the things that are surprisingly dirty things that you should clean in your kitchen:
The “Knife Block”. To be honest, it was only lately that I found out that you have to wash and clean this regularly. Not only does it keeps my Priority Chef knife set clean but it makes sure that it stays sharp too!
To clean it, you just need to remove your knives and turn the block upside down to shake any crumbs that are stuck in the inner crevices. Using a soapy water and small baby bottle nipple brush, you can wash and scrub the knife block.
You can also sanitize the knife block by mixing 1 tbsp of 5.25% household bleach to a gallon of lukewarm water. Allow the block to sit and submerged to it for a minute or so and then rinse thoroughly. You also need to make sure that the knives are properly cleaned and dry before putting back in the knife block. Make sure to let it dry completely to avoid germ buildup.
Next, you also need to make sure that you regularly clean your chopping board. I have separate chopping boards for raw meat, raw chicken and also for cooked food. Aside from this segregation, it is recommended to thoroughly clean your chopping board. Though I have Priority Chef Chopping board that is not only all-natural, it has anti-microbial properties too. But still, I make sure that I clean it regularly.
First, apply salt all over the cutting board and using half a lemon, scour the surface of the chopping board while lightly squeezing it to release the juice. Let it sit for 5 to 10 minute and use a bench scraper to get rid of the gray, dirty liquid. Rinse with a clean wet sponge and warm water. Leave it on the sides to dry before storing in the cabinet.
